Interview: Grant "G-DaWg" Patten w/ Hoke Smart

G-DaWg: "Alright, let's start with this... In your opinion, which era of the UWF was the better of the two and why?"

Hoke: "Well, both had their advantages, but I think the pre-December era was best because it had the hottest RP activity. After I came back from my friend's wedding, I was never able to get UWF up to that level again, although there were several bright spots."

G-DaWg: "Who do you think most deserved the UWF World title during their career, but didn’t get it?"

Hoke: "Delsante...as much as people want to think I was holding him back, I know he probably would have eventually pulled it all together and made it happen. He certainly was more deserving than anyone else who didn't get it."

G-DaWg: "Going back on the way you blatantly fired some people, namely Trent Lawson, do you have any regrets?"

Hoke: "Not really...sometimes you just have to decide that you're not going to put up with immaturity anymore. Opponents to my firing of Alex will scream about Vito's bitching over his loss to Grapps...but Vito ultimately sucked it up and moved on...Alex was continually griping...he just pushed me too far."

G-DaWg: "Now, of course, we must play the classic Name Game. I’ll shoot the name of the handler’s character(s); you give me your thoughts on the person. Let's start with Shane Douglas."

Hoke: "One of the best shooters around, and a man who finally got to properly end his career on top."

G-DaWg: "Chris Cage."

Hoke: "A phenomenal gimmick whose only holdback was himself."

G-DaWg: "Vinny D."

Hoke: "A good guy, whom I hope has much success with DOA Pro."

G-DaWg: "Dino Delsante."

Hoke: "A solid gimmick and another great guy, once you get past his 'win/loss means everything syndrome.'"

G-DaWg: "Serial Thrylla."

Hoke: "A gimmick with brilliant flashes, but rarely a consistent rate of upper-echelon talent.

G-DaWg: "Ethan Tyler."

Hoke: "One of the most innovative and creative gimmicks ever created."

G-DaWg: "The Pegasus Warrior."

Hoke: "A character whom we know still has the ability, and whom we all hope will rise again."

G-DaWg: "Logan Carter."

Hoke: "One of the best portrayals of a rookie's rise to stardom, and the dangers of such a fast-paced promotion."

G-DaWg: "The Dungeon Masters."

Hoke: "Tied only with The Iconoclasts in my book as the best tag team I have ever worked with in a federation."

G-DaWg: "The Regulators."

Hoke: "A classic example of burnout...had a great past, but the future isn't quite as bright anymore."

G-DaWg: "Liger."

Scott Magneta: "Most recognized name in our hobby from most perspectives...hell...I could say pages of stuff about him, but that sums it up."

G-DaWg: "Is it possible to see a return of Rob Traxler, or another Hoke Smart-handled character?"

Hoke: "It is quite possible to see me back as a new (or couple of new) gimmick(s), but Traxler is done for...it would take a TREMENDOUSLY enticing offer for me to bring him back for another run."

G-DaWg: "Here’s a piece from DRob’s message, that I trust you’ve read by now: "Hoke VERY RARELY scheduled matched for his cards. This, in my opinion, is one of the dumbest things a E-Fed Owner can do." What’s your response to this?"

Hoke: "Well, you know...most the guys in UWF thought it was fair that I wanted them to pick their feuds, rather than feeling like I was forcing them into something...did I let it get too slacked before I tried to take control? Yes...I admit to that. But the general idea was for the guys to feel like they had reasonably 100% control over their character's track in UWF."

G-DaWg: "Here’s a question from Dave Fenichel for you: Why do you keep declining the "Loser Leaves Circle Forever" TBL -vs- Rob Traxler match?"

Hoke: "Funny that he asks that, considering I was the one who challenged him to it. You can ask most guys from the circle...they were in the chat room the night I mentioned having it on Doyle's supercard. Fenichel turned it down in favor of his match with Douglas, and the card never got held. I made the challenge specifically for that timeframe...TBL has remained active in GWA during my retirement. I don't honestly know anyone who could put the match on nowadays without some bias to the fact that Traxler has been MIA since UCW and Battlebowl. If was to make a comeback with Traxler (see earlier question for that), I would not mind reinstating my challenge after I get back in the flow. But until that point, Fenichel has to live with the fact that he turned down the offer when I first made it, and now he's just trying to make himself look good by trying to say he invented this idea. Kudos to Dave for trying."

G-DaWg: "And before we wrap this thing up… we’ll just sit back and let you speak your piece. Whatever you want to say to the E-Wrestling public, just shoot."

Hoke: "People prolly think I am just fed up with everything...the bitching, the whining, the fed closings, etc. I admit that in some minor ways, I am...however...I think a lot of times we forget how this "side" got started. No, I'm not talking about ACF or FCA or WWEF or anything like that. I'm talking about a bunch of us handlers just coming on AIM and chatting...that's how the circle got started. It was turned into an "e-fed angle" because a lot of guys wanted it to become such. The downfall of our side started when that happened...because it meant that we turned into a clique.

One of the things I regret oftentimes is that I allowed myself to get sucked into it...not the buddy list, but the e-fed buddy system. It creates that kind of subconscious bias that we never really grasp until much later in time.

People think I am full of myself and full of shit, but you know what? We all are. We all spend a large portion of our lives pretending to be these great wrestlers with adoring fans. We do it for fun (most of us, anyways), but it always turns into a popularity contest. I guess the point I am trying to get at is that all the problems that we see in efeds today are 99.99% our own damn fault....we're just too short-sighted and closed-minded to admit it. I know I contributed to many of the problems when I felt I was trying to solve them...BTC is a good example. It was a failed idea, just took me a while to see that. UWF was another bad idea that seemed so right at the time.

I know what's going to happen after this interview. People will see that I admit I have contributed to the problems in e-wrestling, and they will applaud me for doing so, and then will remain close-minded to the fact that they too contributed. Am I trying to be holier than thou in saying this? No...I am simply pointing out what always happens when someone admits fault. Everyone affirms that admission, but then does nothing to self-examine. We love laughing at someone who's fallen flat on their face...but we hate admitting when we trip over ourselves and fall flat as well. It's just the way things work. Anyways, I am done rambling...I just hope everyone realizes that this hobby CAN be fun for EVERYONE...we just gotta find a way to work together more to make it happen. Do I have the solutions? No. But surely if we put our minds together, we can work something out.

I want to thank EFR for giving me this opportunity to speak. I want to thank all the fedheads out there who try their hardest to make things run smoothly. And last, but not least, I want to thank you guys for letting me stick around as long as I have. I may not be a great guy to get to know, but at least you do a good job playing it up like I'm tolerable. Thanks."
