What is science?

      The process of observation and recording happening

 

Earth Science = the study of planet Earth and it's place in space

      *all other branches contribute to this area

      *there are 4 major areas;

            1. Geology

            2. Astronomy

            3. Meteorolgy

            4. Oceanography

 

Theories and Laws

      Theories = an explantion backed by the results from repeated testing

      Law= a theory that has been sufficently tested and validated

 

Models = used to emphasize, test or demonstrate a thory or law

      1.   Scale = Ratio between the size of the model and real thing

      2.   Physical = represents the actual object

      3.   Mental = IDEAS of how objects look

 

 

Measurement

      A.  How many units are present whether it be;

      1. Length

      2. mass

      3. weight  

      4. volume

      5. temperature

      6. time

 

      B.  We have standards of measurement which is a unit that all people agree to use

 

METRIC SYSTEM

      A. Since 1670 there have been several forms of the Metric System

            1.   In 1960 the general conference of Weights and Measures adopted the

International System of Units (SI)
