Metamorphic Rock

I.               Metamorphic rock are rocks changed by temperature and pressure

A.         There are several types of Metamorphism

1.            Burial Metamorphism – low pressure, low temperature changes in the upper crust

2.            Regional Morphism – as mountains form a magma core is forced into the center of the mountain, where the temps are high along with pressure and causes new minerals form

3.            Contact Metamorphism – magma intrudes on existing rock

B.          Metamorphic rock is classified by texture

1.            Foliated – banded or layered rocks

a.                   such as slates/phyllites

2.            NonFoliated – massive rocks without banding

a.                   such as marble
