Player Information

Complete information on many players is lacking at this time, and the following represents several sources.  At times, there are differences in the data.  These have been noted, but further research will be necessary to determine which is accurate.

Anyone having any information on any of the players, on the team, or on the field, is encouraged to email it for inclusion. Special thanks to Peter Morris of SABR who has provided a lot of new information on several players.

Berry, Charles (Charlie) Joseph born September 6, 1860, in Elizabeth NJ, and died January 22, 1940, in in Philipsburg NJ.  He was the father of Charlie Berry, a catcher for the Philadelphia A's, Boston Reds, and Chicago White Sox.  BR/TR  5'11" 175 lbs Debuted April 30, 1884.  Charlie played only in the Union Association, with Altoona and the Kansas City Cowboys.

Brown, James W.H. (Jim) Born December 12, 1860, in Clinton County, PA; died April 6, 1908, in Williamsport, PA. Debuted April 17, 1884. Jim also played with New York in 1884, was out of baseball in 1885, and with Philadelphia in 1886. He went 0 for 3 each time.

Carroll, Patrick (Pat) Born in March of 1853 in Philadelphia, PA; died February 14, 1916 in Philadelphia, PA. Debuted May 10, 1884. Pat also played for the Keystones in 1884; the Union Association was his only big league time.

Connors, Joseph P. (Joe) Born in Philadelphia, PA; died in Paterson, NJ (some sources list Paterson as birthplace as well.) Debuted May 3, 1884. Joe made the move to Kansas City, but was soon out of baseball.***(From Peter Morris: Joseph Connors died January 13, 1891 in Denver, Colorado. An obit in Sporting Life on 1 24 91 read: "Death of a ball Player Denver January 16 -- On last Thursday morning, Joe Conners, late of the Sunden and Dreyfuss amateur ball teams of this city, died of pneumonia after being sick for only a week. He has been a member of one of the local clubs for the past 3 years, having come from the East, where he had played professionally for 2 seasons. His home was in Paterson, NJ. He had no relatives here, but had the best of care during his sickness. He was in his 29th year and unmarried." It turned out that his real surname was O'Connor, which is why we had had a hard time locating him.)

Cross, Clarence Born March 4, 1856 in St Louis, MO; died June 23, 1931 or 1951 in Seattle, WA. Name was spelled Crause at birth. Debuted May 5, 1884. Also made the move to Kansas City for the end of his career.***(From Peter Morris: Clarence Cross died in 1931.)

Curtis, Edwin R. (Ed) No information known; never managed in the big leagues again.***(From Peter MorrisThe Altoona city directories list: 1882/3 Edwin R Curtis books 11th Ave c 13th h 13th and 11th George H salesman 14th Ave 11th H D Curtis fancy goods 11th Ave c 13th 1884/5 E R Curtis merchant 11th Ave and 13th h 1105 13th But then he disappears. An 1886 note in Sporting Life said "Milton (Pa) BBC elected officers - Edwin R. Curtis, director." So perhaps that is where he went, but we have not been able to trace him. He does not seem to be in Pennsylvania on the 1900 census.)

Daisery, George B. (K.) born in Altoona, PA. Was 5'11", weighed 190 pounds. Debuted May 31, 1884. This was his only big league game

Dougherty, Charles William (Charlie) Born February 7, 1862 in Darlington, WN; died February 18, 1925, in Milwaukee, WN. Debuted April 17, 1884. Never played anywhere else.

Grady, John J. Born June 18, 1860, in Lowell, Mass; died July 15, 1893 in Lowell, Mass. He was 5'7", weighed 150 pounds, and debuted May 10, 1884. Never played anywhere else.

Koons, Harry M. Born in 1863 in Philadelphia, PA. Batted and threw right, was 5'8", weighed 174 pounds. Debuted April 17, 1884. Also played for Chicago/Pittsburgh UA team.***From Richard Malatzky "Death certificate: Henry M. Koons who died April 5, 1932 in Cooper Hospital, Camden. He was born August 18, 1867 in Philadelphia. He was a widower- his late wife's name was Margaret Doyle. His occupation was Clerk with American Railway Express. He died as a result of injuries from being hit by a Public Service Bus in Camden. His parents were Cadwalader Koons of Philadelphia and Emma Snyder." The name Cadwalader is a curious mistake; it was the street he lived on rather than his father's name. The year of birth is a bit off too. But otherwise it matches the Altoona player."

Leary, John J.(Jack) Born in 1858, in New Haven, CT. Threw left; stood 5'11", weighed 185 pounds. Debuted August 21, 1880. Played for Boston and Detroit in the National Association and Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Louisville in the American Association, as well as Altoona and Chicago/Pittsburgh in the UA.

Manlove, Charles Hale (Charlie) Born October 8, 1862 in Philadelphia, PA; died February 12, 1952, in Altoona PA. He batted and threw right, stood 5'9", weighed 165 pounds, debuted May 31, 1884, in the last game. (Courtesy of Fred Schmit: In 1888, he was with Davenport of the Central Interstate League. A July 21 newspaper item in the Toledo, Ohio paper mentioned the release of Manlove and four other players by the club. It noted that in the case of Manlove, the release was at the player's request due to injury.) He was the last player to die. From his obit in the Altoona Mirror of Feb 12, 1952: Manlove lived at 220 Spruce Avenue in Altoona, worked for the PRR and owned a cigar store at 9th Avenue and 12th Street in Altoona after retiring from baseball. Prior to playing for the Mountain Citys, he played in Richmond, VA and Reading, PA. Manlove married Minnie Moore Oct 16, 1881; she died in 1919. They were Lutherans, and had 2 daughters and 3 sons. He is buried at Oak Ridge, Altoona PA.<

Moore, Jeremiah S. (Jerrie) born in Detroit, Mich; died September 26, 1908, in Wayne, Mich. Batted left, stood 5'11", weighed 170 pounds. Debuted April 17, 1884. Went 4 for 23 with Detroit; hit one of Altoona's two home runs.***(From Peter Morris: Jerrie Moore died on September 26, 1890 in Wayne. The 1908 was a typo in the old Baseball Encyclopedias. I'm pretty sure he was born in Canada, not in Detroit, but have not been able to establish an exact place and date.)

Murphy, Cornelieus (Con) (Razzledazzle) Born October 15, 1863, in Worchester, Mass; died August 1, 1924, in Worchester. Also known as 'Monk'. He threw right, stood 5'9", weighed 130 pounds. Debuted April 11, 1884. Also played for Philadelphia; lifetime record was 17-34.***(From Peter Morris: Con Murphy did not play for Altoona. The player was John Murphy from Philadelphia. Right now, we don't have a death date for him but we have a possibility.)

Nofsker, George Washington Bron Augst 24, 1854, in Shippensburg, PA; died May 8, 1931, in Shippensburg, PA. Batted and threw right, weighed 135; debuted April 17, 1884. Never played anywhere.

Shaffer, Frank Debuted April 24, 1884. Never played anywhere else.***(From Peter Morris: I believe the record credited to Frank Shaffer actually belongs partly to Frank and partly to Taylor Shaffer, the younger brother of George "Orator" Shaffer. Missouri Republican, May 14, 1884: "George Shaffer's brother has joined the Altoona nine. He is said to be as graceful and efficient as the St. Louis right fielder but not quite as hard a batter. The Altoonas have released Cleary Cross and he will return to the Lucas Amateurs. They have also released Shaffer, a Cincinnati player." Taylor was also the Kansas City and Baltimore player. I tracked him down; his death certificate read: Zachary Taylor Shafer, b. July 13, 1866 Philadelphia, died October 27, 1945 at the Ramona sanitarium, Glendale, California. Frank remains an enigma. There were notes that he was from Detroit, but I'm pretty sure he was only there briefly and suspect he was really from Cincinnati, as the above note suggests. We really need somebody to go through the Altoona papers and pin down how many games were played by Frank, how many by Taylor and see if there are any clues to Frank's identity.)

Smith, George (Germany) Born in Pittsburgh, PA, April 21, 1863; killed by a car at 4th Street and 4th Avenue, Juniata, Altoona, PA, on December 1, 1927. Batted and threw right, stood 6', weighed 175 pounds. Debuted April 17, 1884. Also played for Cleveland, Brooklyn, Cincinnati, and St Louis. Played on two world series teams in 1889 and 1890. Led his league in fielding in 1887, assists in 1891, 92, 93, and 94. Lifetime average of .243, with 47 home runs and 797 RBIs.
