Here are some books about jeeps. You probably know most of them and/or have seen them on other jeepsites. Some of them may in other languages than English. Some books will be listed with just some written information. I have graded most books on 2 subjects: amusement, and restoration in a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 being junk and with 10 being an absolute must-have. |
Essential Military Jeep - Willys, Ford & Bantam models 1941-1945 by Graham Scott, Bay View Books Ltd, 1996. ISBN: 1 870979 76 1. A nice book with lots of pics, but full with mis-information. Not suitable to use as a reference for a resto, just for fun. Amusement: 7 Restoration: - The Jeep Compiled by: the Olyslager Organisation, edited by Bart H. Vanderveen. Frederick Warne & Co Ltd, Londen, 1972. ISBN: 0 7232 1264 3. A very rare book with some very good b/w pics and commented by one of the best known experts on military vehicles. Very rare in Europe, almost impossible to find in the US. Amusement: 9 Restoration: 6 All American Wonder vol. 1 by Ray Cowdery, Northstar-Maschek AG, 1986. ISBN: 0 910667 10 1. Specially written for the restoration of WW2 jeeps, and simpely a must have for every WW2 jeep owner. Not flawless however. Amusement: 8 Restoration: 9 All American Wonder vol. 2 by Ray Cowdery, Northstar- Maschek AG, 1990. ISBN: 0 910667 20 9. Part 2 of the book above. Same values. Jeep: Bantam-Willys-Ford by Emile Becker & Guy Dentzer, published by Emile Becker, Luxembourg, 1994. Overall French text but with large pieces in English with more than1500 b/w images, and lots of very good in-depth information: VEP jeeps, Willys vs. Ford, locations of "F" marks, equipment, tools, trailers, M201 etc. A true must-have for the restorer! Amusement: 8 Restoration: 10 Jeep: service-repair handbook published by Clymer Publications, Los Angeles, USA, 1977. Relatively rare this is a "civilianised" military workshop manual. Covering military & civilian jeeps in general it makes nice reading, but not very usefull to a restoration. Rifkin, ISO-Galago 1988, ISBN: 0946784957. La jeep en 300 histoires et 150 photos by Jaques Borge & Nicolas viasnoff, Balland Paris 1974, ISBN 2715800134. Some 300 very nice WWII-era stories involving jeeps together with 150 period b/w pics. French text. Amusement: 8 Restoration: 6 Indestructible jeep by D. Denfeld & M. Fry, Ballentine's Illustrated History of the Violent Century volume 36, 1973. Theme book from a serie. Rare. Der Jeep: Entwicklung-Technik-Modelle by M. Clayton, Motor Buch Verlag 1996, ISBN: 61301050. German translation of an English book with some nice b/w pics. Amusement: 7 Restoration: 7 De jeep: gebruik, onderhoud, afstelgegevens by J. Hardonk, G. Van Twist & A.E.M. Sadee, Boom Ruygrok 1947. Written in Dutch this is a very rare and very usefull book with all sorts of information regarding jeeps of that era (MB/GPW/CJ2A), including lists of parts manufacturers and -numbers. Amusement: 8 Restoration: 8 Jeep in detail: Willys MA & MB in the first 50 years of service by Frantisek koran & Jan Mostek, Wings and Wheels Publications 1999, ISBN: 809026770X. This book is intended for modellers and as such is filled with detailed pics in full color of WWII jeeps. Very good close-up's, but there are some restoration errors in the featured vehicles.
