As dawn broke over Indonesia's ancient heritage city of Yogyakarta, rescue workers searched for survivors of the 6.2 magnitude quake that flattened most of the houses in the city and villages. Allmost all structures collapsed like toys, as saturday's  earthquake shook them vigorously.
The powerful earthquake destroyed homes, hotels and temples in central Indonesia early Saturday as people slept, killing more than 5,500 and injuring thousands more in the nation's worst disaster since the 2004 tsunami.
Indonesia is prone to high seismic activities due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and plate fault lines surrounding the Pacific Basin.
Residents started digging mass graves almost immediately, with family members sobbing  beside rows of corpses awaiting burial beneath a blazing sun.
Most of the villagers buried their dead relatives soon after the earthquake.
Two hospitals in the district were overflowing with injured and dying people. Patients were in the corridors, gardens and street outside
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ordered the army to help evacuate victims and arrived with cabinet ministers to guide rescue operations.
Most of the survivors spent the night outside in open space.
The worst affected area was Bantul, anear Yogyakarta, where more than two thirds of the deaths occurred.  Thousands of buildings were flattened and remaining ones will have to be destroyed.
The earthquake struck at 5:54 a.m. near the famed Borobudur temple complex, caving in roofs and sending concrete walls crashing down. Thousands were wounded.
