How this COMFORT WOMEN issue started

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Japanese lawyers who came to Indonesia ---

Like Korea, this issue came to Indonesia. In 1993, three Japanese lawyers including Kenichi Takagi (who is the lead lawyer representing Kim Gaku-jun) came to Indonesia and placed the ads of "we came from Japan to compensate, We want ex-comfort women come to meet us" to the local newspaper.

Soldiers union's(?) leader Uhaljo was instructed by Tokyo lawyer Keniichi Tagagi, and started registration of comfort women. Witness said he was screaming "pay 2 million yen (US$20K)" to the Asean center representative Nakajima. So it seems they can receive 2 million yen if these comfort women come to public.

2 million yen in Indonesia worth almost 200 million yen (2 million US$) in Japan. Therefore it became a huge news. As a result 22.000 women clamed to be ex-comfort women.

This event was reported by Chukyo TV's documentary "IANFU in Indonesian case". The chairman of Indonesian English news Indonesia Times told "It is ridiculous. It is too exaggerated. There was a comfort woman for each soldiers? Why don't you show the good part of Indonesia? Such kind of TV program does not help the friendship of Indonesia and Japan. Unlike anti-Japanese Korea and China, we have our history and PRIDE. We never ask somebody to "GIVE US MONEY" We even did not ask for the compensation to Netherland/Holland who colonized us for 360 years. "

5) A trick in this Comfort Women documentary ---

There was a bad trick in this program when interviewing the ex-comfort women. The subtitle of interview was written as

"When the ended, all Japanese people disappeared. We were left there without money."

But what she really said in Indonesian was

"Who were these Koreans after all? They all disappeared. We were left there without money."

The owners of brothels were Koreans and they disappeared leaving these women behind.

6) Please do something with these Lawyers by Japanese own hand ---

They found the announcement of this TV documentary was reported in "Akahata (Red Flag= Japanese communist news paper). It seems Indonesian government suspected it was the conspiracy of the communists to destroy Indonesia-Japanese relationship.

Sueno Social Minister made a news conference and announced following Indonesian governments official position about this matter.

1) Indonesian government never asked for the compensation for this matter.

2) However, Japanese prime minister Murayama wants to apologize and pay money to the ex-comfort women. So we receive. But we don't pay money for each individual. We use this money to help women's social welfare and health problems.

3) The compensation from Japan was finalized and completed in 1958 treaty.

Takagi lawyers' plan did not succeeded by Indonesian government's stern and uncompromising attitude. Some Indonesian ministers told to journalist Nakajima..

"This problem was initiated by the Japanese, so malicious. But I cannot control Japanese people. It is obvious that there are some Japanese people who report the shameful aspect of Indonesian people and impair our reputation and honor. Please do something for these Japanese people"

INDONESIA

The Indonesian government indicated that it would not be able to identify any former comfort women, and the Asian Womenfs Fund is therefore providing support not specifically for individuals but for the promotion of social welfare services for elderly people (i.e., the construction of facilities for the elderly), as proposed by the Indonesian government.

With regard to accommodation in facilities constructed under these projects, priority is given to those who have come forward to identify themselves as former comfort women, and to other women. It was also decided that, when selecting facility locations, priority would be given to areas where many members of the former Japanese military were stationed, and where it is thought many former comfort women once lived.

In March 1997, the AWF concluded a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indonesian governmentfs Department of Social Affairs, paving the way for the AWF to support the Department in its promotion of social welfare services for elderly people. The Department of Social Affairs is obtaining, from the AWF , financial resources needed to systematically construct, over a 10-year period, 50 facilities to accommodate elderly people who have no family or relatives and are unable to work because of illness or disability. Plans call for a total of 500 people to be accommodated in the facilities.
