Notes: Jehu lived on Lott's Creek. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and either after his discharge, or having come home on a furlough, he was murdered by a band of marauding Rebel outlaws, at the home of his brother, Thomas, on Mace's Creek, in 1865.

Notes: Carr Couch of Big Creek, KY enrolled at Irvine, KY on the 8th day of Dec. 1862 as private in the Co. L 14th Reg. KY Calvary Volunteers in the service of the US in the Civil War. Was discharged at Camp Nelson on 3/24/1864. He was 5'9" tall, fair complexion, black eyes, black hair. Occupation: Farmer. He enlisted a 2d time at Hazard on 10/7/1864 to serve 6 months in Comp. D. Three Forks Batallion, KY Volunteers and was discharged at Big Hill, KY. He had Measels while in the service.

Notes: He enlisted at Booneville, KY on the 11th day of Dec. 1862 and served with Company L of the 14th Reg. of KY Vol. Calvary commanded by Captain William B. Eversole. He was discharged 3/24/1864. He again enlisted at Cutshin, KY. with the Three Forks batallion and was discharged 7/17/1865. In her book "Rugged Trail to Appalachia" Mary T. Brewer wrote on the Eli "Eel" Couch family: "The best known of his children was John, known as Squire John. He served as Magistrate in the first legal system of Leslie County for 36 years. He like whiskey and drank so much that his lips turned white. It was said that in his older days his lips perfectly matched his hair and beard." I have Civil War Pension in my files. Lived on "Big Creek". Children are named in pension as well as wife "Nancy".

Note: After three years as Perry assessor, he moved to Laurel, and in 1877 was elected to the state legislature from the Laurel-Rockcastle district. From that time until 1888, when he went back to Perry and served for three years as county school superintendent, he was farmer, storekeeper, lumberman. In 1894, he was elected police judge of Jackson, resigning that post two years later to become a United States storekeeper and gauger.
