Many of the pieces for the T-34 model tank are cast in aluminum. The following pictures gives you an idea of the process.
The first four pictures show the sand mold being packed
in the cope and drag frame. The master pattern is placed
into the top half of the frame and Petro-Bond casting sand
is packed around the pattern.
The second series of pictures show a flour sifter being used to lay a fine layer of sand on the pattern. This insures that no 'voids' as well as bits of trash get next to the pattern. You also see the  impression left in the sand. The dark area is the beginnings of the runner and gate system.
These three photo's show the completed cope and drag frames being clamped together with a C-Clamp. This just keeps the frame from falling apart during the pour. You might notice the spout on top of the frame, this of course is not typical for most cope and drag frames. The furnace picture shows a great shot of the cucible being removed from the furnace.
The next group of pictures gives us a view of the cucible tongs used along with a pictures of the completed casting.
Finally, the last group shows the completed casting with the sprue still attached. The sprue will be cut from the casting and a final cleanup on the belt sander finish the part. The tracks you see above are not final pieces but rather models for the project. The track will be cast in a spin casting machine.
