SACRED TIME IN ISLAM |
The Fard Ibadah of the
five canonnical daily Salaah, the Fasting of Ramadaan, and the Hadj, |
consists not only of
ritualistic actions, meditation and Holy recitations - but also in the
observance |
of these acts of
Ibadah in special stringently pre-prescribed Divinely Ordained time-periods. |
Under special
circumstances, the abovementioned Ibadah may be observed/performed after its |
stated Sacred
time-periods, BUT NEVER BEFORE THE APPOINTED TIME. |
Islam has in religious
usage a lunar month for the marking of the twelve months of the year, and for |
the marking of the days of
the year. |
The Islamic day is marked
according to lights and shadows : - the day begins after sunset with the |
Fard Salaah of Maghrib.
Night begins with the Fard Salaah of Eshai (when the last of sunlight has |
disappeared). The night
ends with the Fard Salaah of Fajr (the end of darkness, and before the first |
glimpse of sunlight). The
Fard Salaah of Duhr is a degree [four minutes] after Zawaal, the midpoint |
between sunrise and
sunset. The Fard Salaah of Asr is midway between Zawaal and sunset. |

IN THE

(Note - the Quranic word

The pure Islamic Lunar
Calendar was introduced on the 1st of Muharrum, 11 AH - twenty days after |
Allah revealed Verse 5 of
Chapter 10 to the Holy Prophet [PBUH]. The Khalifa Umar [RA] set out |
the criteria for the
Islamic Lunar Calendar. |
[1] |
Each new lunar month
begins with the naked eye sighting of the first visible new lunar |
crescent on the western
horizon after sunset. |
Sighting must take place
on the 29th day of the month. |
[2] |
If the lunar crescent
remains unsighted on the 29th day of the month, then the month is |
completed as 30 days. |
[3] |
The visual sighting report
must not conflict with natural laws and basic scientific |
understanding. |
[4] |
Sighting must be carried
out and recorded in an organised way for each and every month. |
[5] |
No. of days in a month -
not less than 29, and not more than 30 |
[6] |
No. of days in a year -
not less than 354, and not more than 355 |
[7] |
No. of consecutive months
of equal days - four of 30 days, and three of 29 days |
[8] |
The day begins at Maghrib |
[9] |
The visual sighting report
must be witness supported - the persons involved in the |
sighting report must be
adult, reliable, sane, truthful, and with good (implied) and |
unquestioned eyesight |
THE LUNAR MONTHS IN
ISLAM, AS COMMANDED BY ALLAH, EACH BEGIN WITH THE |
UNAIDED VISUAL SIGHTING
OF THE NEW LUNAR CRESCENT ON THE WESTERN HORIZON |
AFTER SUNSET. |
Any other system, no
matter how attractive it may appear to our restricted intellect, cannot |
establish an Islamic
lunar month. |
There are five compulsory
Salaah for each day. We accept this without question. There is no |
argument revolving around
the exact time-periods of each Salaah. We utilise modern timekeeping |
devices for this purpose.
The use of modern watches do not contravene any law of Shariah. But we, |
as Muslims, should always
be on our guard and not accept times of sunrise and sunset obtained |
from western scientific
sources, as these times are usually mean solar times and not exact sun- |
dial times. |
There are those 'Muslims'
who propagate a lunar calendar calculated from conjunction (the birth of |
the moon). This act is a
contavention of a law of Shariah - it is contrary to Allah's Command. There |
is not a single Arab
country that follows the pure Islamic Lunar Calendar. Each of them have their |
own criteria for lunar
month beginning determination; and all of them accept the Saudi manipulated |
dates of the Hadj. |
THE SAUDI
MANIPULATION OF THE ISLAMIC CALENDAR |
The identity of the
compilators of the Saudi lunar calendar has always been a heavily guarded
state |
secret. All information
regarding the calendar, and the announcement of month beginnings, is |
transmitted to the general
public through the offices of the Saudi Ministry of Information (Dr Faud |
Bin Abdul Salaam Bin
Muhammad Al-Farsi - Minister of Information - Phone Riyadh 401 4440). |
The anti-Islamic Saudi
lunar calendar has the wholehearted approval of the Saudi king (Fahd Bin |
Abdulaziz Al-Saud - Phone
Riyadh 488 2222; Jeddah 665 4233; Taif 736 5200; Makkah 823 4111; |
and Madinah 857 2500), the
Minister of Hadj (Dr Mahmoud Bin Muhammad Safar - Phone Riyadh |
402 2200/ 402 2212), all
other Saudi Ministers, the Al-Shura Council of Saudi Arabia, and the |

(the highest Islamic religious council of Saudi Arabia, with the Grand Mufti
as |

HISTORY |
European colonialism was
first felt in Middle Eastern countries at the beginning of the nineteenth |
century (gregorian). Laws
of Christian- European origin were forced upon the inhabitants of the |
occupied Muslim countries.
Muslim puppet leaders became the 'elite' and revelled in European |
education and culture. A
hybrid system of law began taking shape in previously 'Shariah' ruled |
countries. Many 'Muslim
academics' became victims of an inferiority complex and began so-called |
re-interpretations of
Shariah, and called these new verbal interpretations fresh Ijtihad
(neo-Ijtihad), |
and adopted this term as a
newly found treasure. |
As a result of colonial
influences, the Ottomans, in the latter part of the nineteenth century (g), |
developed criteria for
lunar month beginnings based on the following three essentials :- |
[1] |
To see the new lunar
crescent either by naked eye or with the aid of a telescope |
[2] |
At sunset, the moons'
altitude of more than 5 degrees, together with its angular distance |
from the sun of more than
8 degrees would be considered as sufficient minimum |
conditions for visibility |
[3] |
Sighting based events will
be held on the solar date on which the sighting occurs |
During the 1920's (g), the
Saudi tribes, with British assistance, drove out the Ottomans from the |
Arabian Peninsula, and the
Saud claimed the Holy city of Makkah. The leader of the Saud clan was |
crowned by the British as
king of Saudi Arabia. |
A detailed study of the
Saudi lunar calendrical system from 1930 (g) to 2000 (g) results in the |
following : |
[a] |
1930 - 1982 (gregorian) - |
sighting based events
began on the solar date on which |
the sighting occurred |
[b] |
1983 - 1998 (gregorian) |
if the age of the moon was
less than 12 hours on either |
side of sunset, then the
new month would begin at that |
sunset |
[c] |
1999 + (gregorian) - |
if moonset occurs after
sunset on the solar date of |
conjunction, then the new
month begins at that sunset |
There are many instances
where the above criteria were not observed to the letter. Manipulation |
took place in the earlier
period to prevent Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr falling on a Saturday, the |
jewish Sabbath. This
changed after the Saud officially recognised the sovereignity of the state of |
Israel. In the latter
period, manipulation took place in order to shorten the month of Ramadaan,
and |
to predate the days of
Hadj in advance with the excuse of 'infrastructure preparations'. |
THERE IS NO
DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE IN ANY OFFICIAL SAUDI OFFICE OF LUNAR |
CRESCENT SIGHTINGS
FOR ANY ONE OF THE MONTHS OF THE ABOVEMENTIONED YEARS. |
THERE IS NO LUNAR
CRESCENT OBSERVER COMMITTEE IN MAKKAH. |
IN THE COMPILATION
OF THE SAUDI LUNAR CALENDAR, LUNAR CRESCENT SIGHTINGS |
ARE TOTALLY IGNORED. |

Each of the above months
began less than 15 hours after the birth of the new moon. On five |
occasions, the months
began before the birth of the new moon. Taking into consideration all the |
numerical quantities and
astronomical computations, it was impossible to have sighted the |
lunar crescent on
the abovegiven month beginnings at any locality on earth. (database of |
the Interactive Ephemeris
Program). |
On two occasions the month
began when the new moon was more than 12 hours old - this is a |
contradiction of the Saudi
- 12 hr criteria; and this could only be the result of manipulation for
reasons |
known only to the
compilators. |
THE SAUDI
AUTHORITIES DO NOT EMPLOY CRESCENT SIGHTING TO MARK THE |
BEGINNING OF THEIR
LUNAR MONTHS |
THEREFORE THE SAUDI
LUNAR MONTH IS NOT AN ISLAMIC LUNAR MONTH |
THE MOON |
(Ar-e-nah ka waqt - the
mirror of time - Al Qamar) |
[1] |
The moon's motion around
the earth is governed by the attraction of the earth. However, |
it is subjected to major
perturbations or irregularities in movement because of the effect |
of the sun and the
planets. Therefore the precise predetermination of the moon's exact |
position in the heavens at
a future given instance, presents a thorny problem. The 10th |
century (g) Muslim
scientist/astronomer/A'lim, Al Biruni, in his kitaab 'Al Athar al Baqiya' |
stated that the moon had
an irregular orbit. |
Like all celestial bodies
of the solar system, the moon rotates on its own axis- but its |
rotation has a notable
peculiarity - it coincides exactly in period and duration with its |
sidereal revolution of 27
days 7 hours 43 minutes 11.5 seconds; and this means that |
the moon always shows the
same face towards earth. 'SUCH SYNCHRONISATION IS NOT |
THE
PRODUCT OF CHANCE - ALLAHU AKBAR' |
[2] |
The phase of the moon
known as conjunction or birth of the moon - is when the moon is |
midpoint of the
approximately 30 hours it is totally hidden from view once in each |
monthly cycle. |
Conjunction can be
computed with great scientific accuracy and precision to the second |
of atomic time, for each
instance of conjunction. |
In the prediction of the
first sightable lunar crescent, given favourable viewing conditions, |
great scientific strides
have been made in the past twenty years by eminent Muslim |
astronomers - and in the
compilation of lunar date lines (LDL), accurate predictions are |
possible. |
[3] |
[a] A lunar crescent seen at any locality,
must be seen at every locality to the west |
with favourable viewing conditions, and within the
visibility parabola. |
[b] A lunar crescent seen by any one person
at any locality, will be visible to almost all |
the viewers in that group and place. |
[4] |
The earth is not flat as
per Mercato's Projection - the earth is spherical (round) in shape. |
The 'wahdat-al Matla'
(horizon) position is valid only if the earth was a flat surface. The |
countries east of the
sighting country will have to wait at least 24 hours before their |
sighting. |
[5] |
The exact place of the
crescent's first visibility changes every month. Not only does it |
move east and west, but
also north and south. |

[6.12] |
SURA NUH (CHAPTER 71 -
VERSE 15/16) |
See ye not how Allah
has Created the seven heavens one above the other ! |
And made the moon a
light in their midst, |
And made the sun as
a Glorious lamp ! |
[7] |
There is only a single
moon that orbits the earth - once its crescent is visible after the |
conjunction phase, it
becomes visible almost over the whole globe within 24 hours. |
[8] |
The moon has no light of its
own. It is like a dim mirror, and reflects the light of the rays |
of the sun. |
[9] |
Moon age is the least of
the many variables that have to be used when predicting the |
visibility of the first sightable
lunar crescent, and much depends on viewing conditions - |
both atmospheric and
weather. |

FURTHER SAUDI
CALENDRICAL CONFUSIONS |
(A) Prior to the
recognition of Israel by the Saudi, any one of the two Eids could not be
observed on |
a Saturday (the Jewish Sabbath). |
There is now no problem with the above. |
(B) By royal decree, the
Ramadaan month of 1420 was shortened to 29 days - this resulted in the |
month of Shawwaal becoming a total of 31 days. |
© If ones looks at the top
right of any page of the official Saudi lunar calendar, the following will be |
noticed :- |
[1] The tropical solar zodiacal year is numbered according to
one of the 12 signs of the |
astrological zodiac, and the current year is numbered as
1388 after Hijra. |
There if no Islamic textual evidence to approve of the
above. |
[2] The position of 26 minor stars is shown over an average 13
day period and dated accordingly. |
(D) The usual procedure is
to try and manipulate Ramadaan to 29 days. In the mid 1980's, there was |
a Ramadaan of 28 days. |
A MUSLIM'S DUTY |
It is a sacred duty of
each Muslim to comply with the Shariah criteria for the establishment of the |
pure Islamic Lunar Month.
This is not the prerogative of so-called 'Muslim' country governments. |
Each Muslim has the right
to be heard if he/she suspects that an alternative lunar calendrical system |
is being employed. |
Sacred days cannot be computed without a lunar crescent based
sighting month beginning. This is |
a fact. |
As a result of the Saudi non-Islamic
calendrical system, the proclaimed days of the Hadj will always |
be wrong, and therefore it
invalidates the Hadj :- |
SURA BAQARA (CHAPTER 2,
VERSE 186) |
When My servants
ask thee concerning Me, |
I am indeed
close to them: |
I listen to the
prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me |
Let them also
with a will |
Listen to My
Call, And believe in Me: |
That they may
walk in the right path |
[the prayer of the Muslim
is heard when he/she fulfils the requirements of the prayer as Ordained by |
the Almighty Allah. The
enactment of the prayer in its correctly Divinely Ordained time-period is |
compulsory for the
Believer. No form of Fard Ibadah may be performed before its due time] |
THE MUSLIM UMMAH |
Annually, millions of
Pilgrims travel to the Holy Land sincerely believing that they are going to
perform |
the rites and the rituals
of the Hadj on the Sacred Days as Revealed in Al-Qur'an, as as shown and |
observed by Rasoolullah
[PBUH]. |
The dishonest, deceitful,
fraudulent and corrupt arrangement of the pure Islamic lunar calendar by |
the Saudi authorities
continually mislead and betray the Pilgrims, and deprive them of their Hadj. |
Why are the 'ulama' silent
? |
What hold do the Saudi
have over the pilgrims, that the pilgrims are silent ? |
What motivates the Saudi
to continue with an act that has deprived the Ummah of the Fifth Pillar of |
Islam ? |
Are we stupid, or just
plain dumb ! |
There are many of us who
have studied the sciences, and have made indepth research into the Qur'an |
and A'Hadith - why do we
continue our thunderous silence in the face of this greatest threat to Islam. |
My heart bleeds with you
in regard to the plight of the Palistinians - it did so with the Bosnians, |
Kosovos, Kashmiris,
Algerians, Chechens, Somalis, etc. |
Why do you not cry out for
a return of the pure Islamic lunar calendar in Saudi Arabia ? It affects your |
Hadj ! |

SO-CALLED' ISLAMIC
COUNTRIES |
There is not a single
'so-called' Islamic country that adopts the pure Islamic Lunar Calendar for
the |
purposes of observing
Sacred Time and the observance of certain forms of Fard Ibadah therein. The |
year 2000
(gregorian/christian calendar) has been a joke as far as the establishment of
Ramadaan |
was concerned. I shall not
insult the Hijri calendar by referring to 1421 AH. |

All of us, you and I,
are answerable to the Almighty Allah for allowing this |

state of affairs to
continue without protest. We are jointly responsible for |
