This is the home page for Edward J. Calhoon Sr. of Arnold, MD,
a freelance writer and poet, retired communications engineering software
developer and consultant. It includes links to my writing samples, Amateur
Radio, the government agency I worked for and the public domain software
I developed, which can be used for any radio communications applications.
Creative Writing
Links are provided to my creative writing samples. I attended a number
of writing seminars and two creative writing courses during the period
of 1998-2002, at the Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold. I also attended
meetings and seminars held by the Maryland Writers Association. I have
had 9 poems and an autobiographical article published in that period, links
to which are provided in the writing samples page.

Amateur Radio (Call Sign W3CA)
Included are links to my "home" club, the Maryland Mobileers and the largest
national "ham" organization,the ARRL, which sponsors the Amateur Radio
Emergency System (ARES) and the Maryland Emergency Phone Net (MEPN), which
meets daily at 1800 hours local time on 3.920 MHz (LSB) .
Volunteer Agencies (Community Bands/County Emergency Operations Center/Maryland
Defense Force )
Links are provided to the Bay Winds Community Band of Annapolis, Anne Arundel
Community College and Maryland Defense Force. I am a tuba player in both
the Bay Winds and AACC Jazz Ensemble. I am a volunteer radio operator in
the Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Planning Emergency Operations
Center (EOC) in Millersville. I am also a Major in the Maryland Defense
Force 3rd Battalion Headquarters in Annapolis. I am a member of the Fort
Meade Retiree Council as a retired Army Reserve officer, advanced to Major AUS (Ret) in 2002.
NTIA, U. S. Dept. of Commerce(Retired Computer Specialist)
I spent 18 years as a Computer Specialist with the U.S. government, including
the departments of Army, Navy and Commerce. The last 12 years was with
the Computer Services Division, Office of Spectrum Management, of the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) in Annapolis,MD.
NTIA is involved in funding Internet connections for nonprofit organizations
and electronic equipment for public radio and television stations. NTIA
also manages all government radio spectrum assignments through the Interagency
Radio Advisory Committee (IRAC) and jointly with the FCC represents the
U.S.A. in international spectrum conferences. I retired when the Annapolis
office closed in 1997.
Microcomputer Spectrum Analysis Models(MSAM)(ex-Lead Programmer/Consultant)
The last 8 years of my government career were spent as the Lead Programmer/Project
Leader on the Microcomputer Spectrum Analysis Models, which are a set of
14 Communications Engineering and Radio Wave Propagation programs, plus
a Menu and associated utility and database programs. They are in the public
domain and are available free through FTP download. An animated demonstration
program may first be downloaded from this page, and the first chapter of
the users manual may be viewed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which may
also be downloaded from the Adobe page with the Acrobat software tools
link below. I am available for consultation on the programs and adaptation
of the source code.
