I am assuming you have no friends playing on Dark Tide that can or will help you get started. If you have a friend playing on DT, then get his/her advice and help. Log on when they are on and stick with them until you can play on your own. I also assume you have played a few months on another server, because, if not, you will be eaten alive and your body parts will litter the landscape. I further assume you plan to play as an anti PKer as I have no advice for thoes that just want to kill other players.

First thing is to plan out where your going to play using your characters on your NPK server. What city will you start in and where you will go when you first log on. Your first character on DT will need to exist without a town, so don't start with a mage or archer or any other character type that needs to buy things. I suggest you specialize unarmed and run skills and max your attributes to best use these skills.

Log on early in the morning when there are fewer players on DT and get as far away from the starter town as you can as quick as you can. If you planned this out well, you will have a lifestone away from town in mind. Go there and touch it and you will have half the battle of starting a character on DT won.

Sooner or later you will need to go into town. A great way to protect yourself is to roll up a mule and leave the mule near town. When you must go to town, drop off thoes things you cant bear to lose on the mule.

Place everything that is for sale in one pack so that when you sell to a retailer, just give him the pack. The retailer will take only the things he can buy and return the pack to you.

On your way out of town, get the things back from your mule that you use in battle and give the mule all of your trade notes. Now, the next time you need something in town, you can send your mule into town and scout the area out. If no danger the mule can use the trade notes to buy for your main character. (trade notes are no-drop)

Escaping another player that is attacking you can be a real problem. Having an escape plan is critical to your survival. Logging off is not a good plan unless the attacker is at the edge of your radar screen. The act of logging off exposes you to a critical hit that will most likely kill you. Running is also not a good plan as an attacker will most likely be faster than you.

A good plan is to play near a portal that you can reach in time. Enter the portal and then log off. Allow at least a half hour before logging on again as your attacker may be waiting for you.

An excellent plan is to play near a cliff or other high place that will kill you if you jump. When an attacker comes, jump off the cliff. Yes it will kill you, but your attacker gets no experiance and cannot loot your corpse. Come back to your corpse before it decays (5 minutes per your level ie: a 10th leveler has 50 minutes to get his stuff). Most likely your attacker wont wait around that long.

The Darktide server is different in some subtle ways that you may not expect. You can not occupy the same space with another player while both of you are PK. When a critter kills you, you do not become NPK. Many players exploit these facts. For instance, a player will block your exit from a room by standing in a doorway. Using a missile weapon, he can kill you and you can't escape. Another example is camping a lifestone. When a critter kills you and sends you to your lifestone, these players are waiting to kill you a second time. Most of your death items are on your first corpse so now these killers get your better stuff like your Matty Coat.

It is wise to always have an exit plan when entering any room with only one exit and make sure the lifestone you choose is not camped by PKers.

If you do get killed by another player, DO NOT SAY ANYTHING! Anything you say will only confirm that they were right to have killed you in their mind. To better understand the mindset of this type of player try reading this url: http://www.circleoftruth.org/d00dessay.html (sorry you will have to cut and paste this link as I do not have permission to link to this site).

I will make improvements and additions to this column over the next few updates.

Something to keep in mind while playing on the Darktide server:

Once upon a time...there was a little sparrow...who, while flying south for the winter, froze solid... and fell to the ground. To make matters worse, a cow crapped on him. But the manure was warm and defrosted him. So there he is, warm and happy to be alive and he starts to sing. A cat comes along...and he clears off the manure and eats the little bird. The moral of the story is this: Everyone who craps on you is not necessarily your enemy...and everyone who gets you out of crap...is not necessarily your friend. And if you're warm and happy...no matter where you are, keep your big mouth shut.
