Fear of fish pushes up chicken price

By Zeeneeshri Ramadass and Sean Augustin

"The fear of consuming fish, in the wake of the tsunami disaster, has led to an increase in chicken prices."

"Meanwhile, in Johor Baru, a surging demand for chicken has pushed the wholesale price by 50 sen from the usual RM3.50 per kg."

A decrease in the desirability of fish as a source of protein in a diet has lead to an increase in the demand for chicken. At the old price, the quantity demanded is now greater than the quantity supplied. The shortage is a signal to the market, so this increase in the demand for chicken leads to an increase in the price of chicken.
