As a former unschooler (now 23 years old), I'm trying to find out if there is a group or organization for unschool "graduates" or adult unschoolers. I was searching the web for this when I came across your page. Good job! It's nice to see home/unschooled ids grown up and continuing their education - whether in university or in life.

Help! I have a 12 yr old (going on 17) who is addh & very heavy on the "h"! He is currently in a day treatment school & trying to get into main stream again. I've been seriously thinking of home schooling. The problem is at first he thought the idea w s great. I told him we would have to have a "trial basis" a few times first. One day while he was at home with his puppy that had gotten run over, I left him assignments. The work was completed in his usual "hurry up & get it done" status. I went over his recap writing assignment & showed him where to start new paragraph, capitalization etc & he blew up on me. He said that it was worse than school & forget this home schooling stuff (in the heat of a moment). Now he asks about when he could start to h me school again - he has trouble making up his mind on all types of situations. The bigger problem is that I am now a single parent of 3 kids, 12, 10 & 8. I work full time PLUS (telemarketing manager). My time with my kids is very limited as is. I spe d an hour each night at least helping with homework now. Can I really make this happen? I really want to - to me it's the ethics, values etc that are lost in the public school. Any advise?

Have you ever read anything by Edith Wharton? If so, what did you think of it?: not for a few years but as an English major in the mid 70s I read much of her work and she was one of my favorite authors. I won a prize for a paper I wrote on The Ag of Innocence (long before the movie.) I think that she is one of the greatest American authors, relegated to "one of the best women authors" by the critics. That means that she can be ignored by most people.

I really enjoyed reading all about your struggle with writing, I am just starting out with home schooling my 5 year old son, and 3 year old son. My 5 year old son does not like to write much. I decided not to push, but did not know if that was the right t ing to do. After reading all about your struggle, I feel much better about my decision. I do allot of hands on stuff, and not so much written assignments. I wasn't sure if not doing the paper work,"the way they do in school", was going to be good for my c ildren. I want them to learn but I want them to love it also. I hated school. I never read a book until I was out of school! I use the internet for most of my ideas. There is allot of good info out there. I thank you for your web site. When I get people a king me about homeschooling should's or should not's. I am going to send them your way. Thanks Again!!! Blessing in Christ, Lisa <><

I am a unschooling mother of two, a nine year old and a seven year old. Reading your site has given me great comfort in how I am approaching the learning that my children are acquiring. They are frequently asked about tests and homework without being ab e to give definitive answers. I just tell people that my children learn all day, and I leave it at that. I have not found a convenient way to sum up all that my children learn by their own curiosities. I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful site th t you have. It is extremely encouraging to know that one can be intelliegent and articulate, without having a teacher say that you are so, or a test to prove it. Keep up the excellent work! I hope my children will have the same love of learning that yo have. So far it seems they do, there questions are endless on some days. Thank you! Marilyn Lomax

Your journal was just what the doctor ordered. We've been homeschooling our 8 year old son for the past two years, this last year being a "stop and start and stop again" routine. I've been concerned that we aren't spending enough time on the "school" aspe t, worried that he may fall behind his "peers," and wondering if college will be tough if he hasn't been exposed to the "world's" way of schooling, ie, multiple choice tests, time limits, boring classes. You have reinvigorated me. Your journal provided me with proof that there *is* a better way, that there are reasons to "not fit in" with the crowd...and that those reasons have merit in the means, not just the ends. I'll check back for further entries in your journal. Your parents must be proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself. Thank you for sharing, and shoring up my belief in homeschooling!

I really enjoyed your page. I found it very interesting because of your feelings on homeschooling and your thoughts on what learning really means. Definitely something to consider. Thanks for giving me your site address. I enjoyed it.

It was thrilling to read your homepage. I have a son and one of his friends that I teach. They are both in the 4th grade. Many times I worry if I might be doing them a disservice with our "relaxed" home school. Your homepage has given me some much-nee ed encouragement. Thankyou!

I have really enjoyed reading your account of your unschooling history. We unschool our three children and feel it is the path that is right for our family. One of my kids feels the same way about writing as you did (maybe not quite as strongly), and it s WONDERFUL to read your writing, so I know that the days when he chooses not to write anything are not the end of the world! Thanks for that insight.

How can my site be improved?: By continuing to update your very interesting and informative college journal.
Have you ever read anything by Edith Wharton? If so, what did you think of it?: I've read Ethan Frome and The Age of Innocence. Ethan Frome I read in high school years ago. I don't remember much about it, except that I found it a good book. A f w years ago, I was looking for something to read and decided to read all of the winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. During that time, I read The Age of Innocence and enjoyed it. I'm surprised that so many others signing your guestbook haven't ven heard of Edith Wharton.
What comic strip character do you believe would make the best President, and why?: Congresswoman Lacey Davenport, although it's now a bit late for her, I believe.

Comments:
I very much enjoyed reading your college journal. Your attitude and mindset are quite different from many college freshmen. You are in college to learn, and I hope you continue to seek out professors of the highest quality.

I enjoyed your site very much, especially your comments about learning to write. We are unschoolers, but writing (both handwriting and composition) is one area that I worry about. Our son (almost 9) doesn't want to spend time doing either one. He does ots of thinking and learning about other areas (math, science, history, geography, etc.), and loves doing acitivities with me in these areas. Any mention of writing activities (pen pal letters, stories, etc.) prompts rolled eyes and moaning! Your descri tion of your own path to writing is reassuring. My husband also teaches part time at a local University, and is often frustrated by his students lack of interest in learning what he is there to teach. It was very interesting to see the perspective of a enuinely interested student (and also how standard class requirements, such as writing an analytical essay to "prove" knowledge rather than develop it, are harmful).

R.A., Your site is terrific! I so enjoyed your college diary. This evening, I'm going to post your URL to the Oklahoma homeschool list with my hardy recommendations to take a look. My own children have never been to school (ages 11, 9, 4.5). We are radical unschoolers ourselves. It is always reassuring to talk with older unschoolers, however--they are always such *neat* people!! Gives me confidence to carry on! Thanks for sharing your life with us.

I'm looking forward to perusing your site in depth. I'm the mother of 4 unschooling kids, one of whom "graduated" last spring and is working almost full-time and attending college part-time. He's doing great. My other 3 are 15,10 and 7! Keep your list up, it's encouraging to those of us who are still learning how to let our kids learn!

I'm also developing a Geocities web site. I also welcome any suggestions on how to make a cool site. Best wishes -Donna

Comments:
I was very impressed with your writing ability and with your whole educational process. My partner and I are about to have our first child which is why we're checking out homeschooling. The rest of the children in both our families are barely able to read, even at graduation, so we decided we don't want to trust our child to the vagaries of a system that has consistently failed. I wish you the best of luck in whatever path you follow. You seem to possess the skills you'll need to accomplish whatever you wish.
