2003 Taiwanese Heroes
Where dreams can become realities

This is created to support Taiwanese baseball players (along with Sean Chen's journey to NBA) who play in the United States. Chin-Feng Chen became the first Taiwanese to appear in the Major League last September when he was called up for the pennant race run with the Dodgers and Chin-Hui Tsao became the first Taiwanese pitcher in the Major League on 7/25/03 with a win in his Major League debut. In case you don't know, Taiwan has won the Little League World Series 17 times, most in the Little League history and Chen was the star outfielder from the 1990 Taiwan team who defeated Shippensburg, PA 9-0 in the championship game.

Last Start: Tsao pitched well in his last game of the 2003 season. He won the 3rd game of his career with the victory over the Padres.

Chin-Lung Hu SS
Los Angeles Dodgers (Ogden Raptors)
Age: 19, B-T: R-R, Ht: 5-9, Wt: 155
Background: Hu attends Chinese Culture University in Taipei. He plays shortstop and second base and has been on Taiwan's junior national team the past three years. In the 2002 World Junior Championship in Canada he started at shortstop and hit .474 with four homers and 12 RBIs while batting leadoff. He is the third Taiwanese player signed by the Dodgers after Chin-Feng Chen and Hong-Chih Kuo.

Kevin Huang RHP
Boston Red Sox (Sarasota Red Sox)
Age: 21, B-T: R-R, Ht: 6-0, Wt: 172
Background: Huang is the first Taiwanese signing by the Red Sox. With a low-90s fastball and good curveball, Huang was rated as the 15th best prospect in the organization by Baseball America. He was born Jun-Chung Huang, but has gone by Kevin since his high school English teacher gave all her students American nicknames.

Hong-Chih Kuo LHP
Los Angeles Dodgers
Age: 22, B-T: L-L, Ht: 6-0, Wt: 235
Background: Kuo graduated from Nan Yin High School in Tainan City in Taiwan. He played for Taiwan in the 2002 Asian Games. Kuo's best pitch, his fastball, is clocked in the mid-to-upper 90s while he is working on continuing to develop his curveball and changeup as his second and third options. Will not pitch in 2003 after having the second Tommy John surgery in the last three seasons.

Dragon Lo RHP
Colorado Rockies (Tri-City Dust Devils)
Age: 18, B-T: R-R, Ht:6-6, Wt:190
Background: Lo is Colorado's second major signing out of Taiwan, after No. 1 prospect Chin-Hui Tsao, and an indication of their growing efforts on the international front. The Rockies beat out the Braves, Dodgers, Mariners, Red Sox and Yankees to get Lo. He attended Koio Yuan High, which is also Tsao's alma mater, and helped Taiwan win the junior Asia Cup tournament in 2001. He is a long way from the majors, but may have the best potential of anyone in the system. Real name is Ching-Lung Lo, Lung means Dragon in Mandarin so a friend of his in Denver told him to go by Dragon and he lives up the name by throwing fiery smoking fastballs in his 6-6 frame.

Chien-Ming Wang RHP
New York Yankees (Trenton Thunder)
Age: 23, B-T R-R, Ht: 6-3, Wt: 225
Background: In 2000, Wang had an excellent pro debut at Short-Season Staten Island but missed all of 2001 with shoulder surgery. He returned to the New York-Penn League in 2002 and allowed just three earned runs in his final 32.2 innings to finish up the season with ERA of 1.72. He throws four different pitches and is most notable for displaying excellent command. Also goes by the name Tiger.

Chao-Kuan Wu C
Seattle Mariners (Peoria Mariners)
Age: 19, B-T: L-R, Ht: 6-3, Wt: 192
Background: Wu graduated from San Ming High School in Kaohsiung and attended Fu Ren University in Hsinchuang. Although Wu was a first baseman in high school, the Mariners is transforming Wu, who bats lefthanded and throws right, into a catcher. Since most catchers bat righthanded, finding one who bats from the other side of the plate could make Wu a valuable commodity for the Mariners. A change in positions didn't seem to bother Wu at the 2002 World Junior Baseball Championships held in Canada. When the Taiwan team's starting catcher went down with an injury, Wu took over and helped the team to a second-place finish. He hit .419 (13 for 31) and hit four home runs in the tournament, including one in the championship game, which Taiwan lost to Cuba 9-6.
