PRESTON NORTH END History
League History
Wee bit of history : After almost 20 years in the lower divisions, Preston North End are back in the top half of the Football League as 1999/2000 CHAMPIONS of division 2!
Preston North End started as North End Cricket and Rugby Club in 1863, playing most sports. In about 1879 football (soccer) was added to the list. A vote was taken in 1881 to concentrate the clubs efforts on football. A few weeks later PNE FC joined the Lancashire Football Association.
In 1888/89, not only were PNE founder members and League Champions of the new Football League, but they won the FA Cup and were the first team to achieve the double. In 1889/90 North End were again League Champions and were runners up in the following three seasons.
A limited company was formed in 1893. North End is the only club from the founder Members of the Football League who have played continuously on the same ground. Deepdale has been the venue for football for over a century.
The period before the First World War (and much of the time since) is often referred to as yo-yo, when North End have suffered relegation and bounced back with promotion. Many fans refer to their beloved club as "The Yo-Yo team".
