Irish born, German trained, he remained an Operetta composer throughout his lifetime, but he wrote for American audiences. Herbert virtually dominated Tin Pan Alley at the turn of the century. He was so prolific that he could work on several operetta scores at the same time. A thoroughly trained musician, he could serve as conductor of a major symphony orchestra while also writing ambitious concertos and operas.
Although best known as an operetta composer, Herbert was one of a visionary group of songwriters including Irving Berlin and John Philip Sousa who in 1914 founded ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. ASCAP was the first and foremost guardian of performing rights. They established a practical and economical way for music creators to ensure they would be compensated for the public performance of their works in accordance with the U.S. Copyright Law.
