Adeline is an expansion of Adela, a Germanic name coming from Athala and meaning “noble.”

History:
Adeline was introduced to England by the Normans after they invaded in 1066. It was fairly common during the Middle Ages. By the 1650s, however, it had become quite rare. Adeline was revived in the 19th century.
