Alastair is the Scottish Gaelic form of Alsandair, Alexander. Alexander is the English form of Alexandros, a Greek name. Originally it meant “Defender of the People,” from “alexein” (to defend), and “andros” (man).

History:
Alexander was also very popular in the Middle Ages, especially in Scotland (since the 11th century), where several kings bore the name. Alastair is a Gaelic version of that name.
