Alastair is the Scottish Gaelic form of Alsandair, Alexander. Alexander is the English form of Alexandros, a Greek name. Originally it meant Defender of the People, from alexein (to defend), and andros (man).
History:
Alexander was also very popular in the Middle Ages, especially in Scotland (since the 11th century), where several kings bore the name. Alastair is a Gaelic version of that name.
