Etymology:
Alonso is an alternate form of the Spanish name Alfonso, which is based on a Visigothic (Germanic) name, Adalfuns, meaning “Noble, Ready,” from “adal” (noble) and “funs” (ready).

History:
Alonso is a variant that arose in Spain about the 14th century, probably as an everyday, vernacular form of Alfonso. By the 16th century it was a very popular Spanish name, much more common than Alfonso had become.

In the United States, however, Alonso was not common among the Spanish-speaking settlers of the 19th-century American southwest. But oddly enough, the variant Alonzo was common among the English-speaking population.
