Amaryllis comes from a Greek word “amarysson” meaning “to sparkle.”

History:
Amaryllis was first used by the ancient Latin poets Ovid, Virgil, and Theocartus (and later, England’s John Milton) as an archetype; Amaryllis, in their poems, was a typical country girl. It became the name of a flower in the late 1700s (family is Amaryllidaceae, which species include Snowdrops and Narcissuses, Jonquil, Leeks, Chives, and Daffodils) which led to its brief, minor revival as a first name, during the late Victorian “craze” for giving flower names to girls.
