Anastasia

Gender: Feminine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Anastasia is a Latin name meaning “Resurrection,” from “anastasis.”

History:
Due to the fame of a 4th century martyr saint, Anastasia has enjoyed considerably more popularity than its male counterpart, Anastasio. It reached England by the 13th century where it was spelled and pronounced Anstice (or Anstey, Anstes, Anstis, or Anstiss). It was spelled Anastace by the 15th century, and Anastasia by the 18th. Modern use of the name comes from the romantic (though false) story of the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, who supposedly survived her family’s murder.

The name Anastasia has been a favorite in Russia since the Middle Ages.
