Ann is the English form of Hannah (derived via the Latin Anna and the French Anne). Hannah (a Hebrew name) originally it meant “God Has Favored Me,” “Grace, Graceful,” or “Prayer.

Although Anne was also historically popular in England, Ann was the favored version during the 19th century. It was replaced during the early 20th century by Anne.
