Archibald comes from an old Germanic name, Ercanbald (found occasionally in Old English as Eorcanbald) meaning “Genuine, Bold,” from “ercan” (genuine) and “bald” (bold).

History:
Archibald was another name brought to England by the Normans. Although it died out in southern England (leaving behind several surnames), Archibald thrived in northern England and Scotland, becoming common (especially in the Douglas and Campbell clans). The name was revived, somewhat, in the 19th century.
