Avery

Gender: Masculine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Avery is a medieval, Norman French form of Alfred, a name derived from Aelfraed, an Old English name which meant “Elf Advice,” “With Elf Wisdom,” “Good Counsel,” or “All Peace,” from “aelf” (elf), and “raed” (advice, counsel), or “fried” (peace).

The Normans took the name in its Latin form (Alvredus) and adapted it as Alveré or Auveré. Alveré then became the modern Avery.

History:
Alfred was an Anglo-Saxon name displaced by the Norman Invasion of 1066. The Normans took the name and Latinized it, forming Alredus, which was then adapted into French as Alveré, and then Auveré. This became the modern surname Avery.

Like many other surnames, Avery is currently enjoying some currency as a first name, especially in the late 20th, early 21st centuries. This may be traceable to the popular sitcom Murphy Brown, when in 1992 the title character named her son Avery.
