Aylmer is a Norman French spelling of the Old English name Aethelmar, meaning “Noble Famous” from “aethel” (noble) and “maer” (famous).

History:
Aethelmar was a popular Old English name before the Normans conquered England in 1066. Afterwards, under its revised spelling, it continued to be common, and even left behind a few surnames.

Aylmer may have been revived in the 19th century by Tennyson’s poem “Aylmer’s Field.”
