Etymology:
Bryant comes from an English surname, based on the name Brian. Brian is the English form of an Old Irish name, Brigonos. It originally meant “High Hill.”

History:
Brian, although more famous as an Irish name, was also common in 10th century Normandy, and was brought to England with them when they invaded in 1066. Although the first name Brian quickly disappeared again, it did leave behind the surname Bryant, which was transferred for use as a first name in the 19th century.
