Catharine is an alternate spelling of the name Catherine, the French form of Caterine, the Old French form of Katherine, a blend of the (possibly) Coptic name Aikaterina and the Greek word “katharos” (pure). Possibly connected with the Greek word “aikia” (torture) or the goddess of the underworld named Hecate.

History:
Catharine is an alternate spelling for the name Catherine. The versions were pretty much interchangeable until the late 19th century, when Catherine with an ‘e’ rapidly overtook Catharine with an ‘a.’
