Catrìona is a modern Scottish Gaelic form of the name Katherine. Katherine is a blend of the (possibly) Coptic name Aikaterina and the Greek word “katharos” (pure). Possibly connected with the Greek word “aikia” (torture) or the goddess of the underworld named Hecate.

History:
Catrìona is a modern form of the name Caitríona, from Caiterína, which developed
initially in 13th century Ireland as a form of Catherine.

Catriona may have been revived by Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1893 novel Catriona (called David Balfour in the U.S.).
