Cedric

Gender: Masculine.
Language
: English.
Etymology:
Cedric has many possible origins It may be a form of Caratacos, or Caractacus, the Latin form Caradoc, the Anglicized form of Caradawg (Caradog) from “car” (love). Other meanings may be: “Welcome Sight,” “Bent Lake” “War Chief” “Spectacle of Bounty” or “Lord of Wars.” Cedric’s ultimate origin is unknown.

History:
Cedric was coined by Sir Walter Scott for his 1819 novel Ivanhoe (in which Cedric the Saxon was a prominent character). It is theorized that he developed (perhaps inadvertently) the name from Cerdic, the name of an early Saxon leader (the founder of the kingdom of Wessex). It is possibly connected with Caractacus, the name of an early Briton who led a rebellion against Rome in the 1st century.

Though introduced by Sir Walter Scott, the name did not become popular until after 1886, when Frances Hodgson Burn published Little Lord Fauntleroy, a sentimental tale about a young boy named Cedric Errol.
