History:
Constance was the name of the daughter of Constantine the Great (first Christian Roman Emperor).

A popular Norman name from the 9th century on, it was introduced to England by the Normans (by the daughter of William the Conqueror, Constance 1066-1090), and usually spelled Custance. Constance and Constancy became common among 16th and 17th Puritans, as well.

Constance was revived again in the late 19th century.
