Constant is the modern French form of Constans, the Old French form of the Latin name Constantius, meaning “Steady.”


History:
Constant is the French form of Constantine, the name of the first Christian emperor. As such, it was previously rather common in French-speaking lands.

Constant was also fairly popular among the Puritans, who favored qualities-as-names (like Faith, Hope, Charity, Mercy). After the 17th century, however, it declined in the English-speaking world.
