Etymology:
Cristóbal is the Spanish form of Greek name Christophoros (Khristophoros), from a Greek vocabulary word. Originally it meant “Bearing Christ” (in one’s heart).

History:
The name Christophoro, an early Spanish form of Christophoros, had become Christobal, or Cristóbal by the early 11th century (the name Caterina also turned its ‘r’ into an ‘l” becoming Catalina).

Cristobal was popular in the 1400s and the 1500s (especially after Columbus made his famous journey), but had declined considerably by the 19th century.
