Denzil comes from an English surname, referring to Denzall, a place in Cornwall.

History:
In the 16th century, William Holles married Anne Denzell, of Denzell, Cornwall. Their son was named Denzell, and the name passed into use in that family.

In 1911 Arnold Bennet (1867-1931) used the name in his comedic play The Card and soon after the name Denzil made an appearance in the Untied States.

In the late 20th century, the variant Denzel has gained some currency, after American actor Denzel Washington.
