Dorinda

Gender: Feminine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Dorinda comes from the name Dora (plus the “inda” of names like Melinda, Belinda, Linda, etc.). Dora is short for Dorothy, or Isidora, both Greek names wherein the “dora” means “Gift.”

History:
Dorinda was first noted in the 18th century, most notably in George Farquhar’s (1678-1707) play The Beaux Stragagem for the daughter of “Lady Bountiful.” This was a time when “inda” names were trendy (Clarinda was invented in 1696, Lucinda in 1605, Belinda in 1689, Melinda in the 18th century).

When “inda” names became popular once again in the mid-20th century (Linda, Belinda, Melinda), Dorinda once again makes an appearance.

Pronunciation: dore-inn-dah.

Diminutives:
English: Dora.

Alternates: Dorindah.
