Etymology:
Elihu is an older form of the name Elijah. Elijah comes from a Hebrew name meaning “God is Jehovah” from “El” and “Jahweh,” both of which refer to the Lord. Reverse the elements and one gets the name Joel.


History:
Elihu is another example of an Old Testament name (one belonging to several personages) that was revived and used almost exclusively by 17th century English Puritans.
In the United States, it lasted until the 19th century.
