Etymology:
Elwin is an Old English name with several possible sources:
1. It could from Aelfwine, meaning “Elf Friend” from “aelf” (elf) and “wine” (friend).
-or-
2. It could from Aethelwine meaning “Noble Friend” from “aethel” (elf) and “wine” (friend).

History:
Elwin was a rare medieval name, an Anglo-Saxon name that became a surname after the Norman Conquest and then died out. As a surname, it (and its variants) was transferred for use as a first name during the 19th century.

Alvin, an original alternate form of Elwin, also died out soon after the Norman Conquest. It was revived in the 19th century and is slowly dying out again.

Aylwin was briefly revived after the 1898 novel Aylwin by Theodore Watts-Dunton.
Elvis experienced a minor surge in popularity during the 1950s.
