Etymology:
Emily is the English form of Emilia, another form of Aemilia, a Latin name, the feminine for Aemilius, meaning “Rival,” from “amulus.”

History:
Emily was rarely known in England until the German Hanovar dynasty took the throne. Amelia, daughter of King George II of Great Britain, was popularly known as Princess Emily (Amelia, although also a German name, has a completely different origin). While Emily has always been fairly popular, it has recently become very popular.
