Etymology:
Emmanuel is the English and French form of a Hebrew name which means “God is With Us.”

History:
Emmanuel was first used as a name by the Greeks. It spread west to Spain and Portugal, becoming very popular (as Manuel, or Manoel). In 1520, Maria Beatriz (daughter of King Manoel I of Portugal) married Carlo II, Duke of Savoy. Their son was named Emmanuel Philibert and the name passed into use among the Italian nobility.

For English, Emmanuel is the New Testament spelling, and Immanuel the Old Testament spelling. During the 16th century, they spread to Cornwall, England. Their was a brief surge in use, but neither name really become widespread.
