Evadne

Gender: Feminine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Evadne comes from a Greek name meaning “Good Holy” from “eu” (good) and “adnos” (holy).

History:
Evadne is a name from Greek mythology. It belonged to the wife of Capaneus (killed for his arrogance by Zeus), who burned herself on her husband’s pyre. This story is found in the works of several Greek and Roman poets.

After the Renaissance (when many works by ancient poets were rediscovered), the name Evadne is found in Beaumont and Fletcher’s 1610 play The Maid’s Tragedy (supposedly set in Greece) and in Sarah Grande’s controversial 1893 novel The Heavenly Twins. Both are about marriage.

Although it is found every so often, Evadne has never been common.
