On December 9, 1531, a Mexican Indian named Juan Diego is said to have had a vision of the Virgin Mary, who called herself “Holy Mary of Guadalupe.” “Our Lady of Guadalupe” became a very important figure to Mexican Catholics and the patron saint of the Americas.
Guadalupe has long been a common name among Mexican immigrants to the United States, for both men and women.
