Etymology:
Lillian is an elaborate version of Lily, the English name of the flowers in the genus Lilium, or other similar flower. Several prominent lilies include the The African Lily, the Tiger Lily, Lily of the Valley, Leopard Lily, and the Cobra Lily. When given as a name, it represents purity.

History:
Lillian began life as a diminutive of Elizabeth (from Lili) in the 16th century. In the 19th century, however, it became an elaborate form of Lily, due to the preference for flower names.
