Lorraine has several possible sources.
1. Lorraine is most likely from the Lorraine region, in France. In Latin its name was Lotharingia, and it was named for its first ruler, Lother I. Lother (or Luther) means “Noted Warrior” or “People’s Warrior” from Germanic “hlud” (famous), “liut” (people), and “heri” (army).

History:
Lorraine was originally a Scottish aristocratic surname, borne by people whose ancestors come from Lorraine region of northeastern France. From the 19th century, however, it has been used as a feminine name, probably due to the popularity of Laura.
