Mara was not really a name. In the Old Testament Naomi (whose name means “pleasant”) calls herself “Mara” (bitter) in a despairing pun. Nevertheless, Mara was occasionally adopted by 17th century English Puritans, who were fond of giving their children even the most minor of Biblical names.
