Etymology:
Marian is originally a medieval English alternate form of Marion, a diminutive form of Marie, the French form of Maria, the Latin form of a Hebrew (or Egyptian) name: Miriam, Mariamne, or Myriam. The meaning is disputed. Some suggestions include: "Wished for Child," "Bitterness," or "Drop of the Sea," or "Rebelliousness."

History:
Marian arose during the Middle Ages merely as an alternate form of Marion. In the 18th century, when double names (Mary Jane, etc.) were first catching on, Marian (especially in its French form, Marianne) was taken as a combination of Mary (or Maria) and Ann, as in Mary Ann.
