Jogging,
Hiking and Finding Your Inner Ghandi
by Michael Sweeney
Do you ever get tired of running
the shores of Town Lake with scores of other joggers? Are the streets
of South Austin getting to be a little too mundane to keep your routine?
Is the workout room in your local gym starting to look just a little too
familiar?
Well, if you
can break out of your daily ritual, there’s a place in Austin where you
can take in one of the most beautiful views in all of Hill Country and
still get in your daily run…Mount Bonnell. The 106 steps are quite
steep, but the climb is far more rewarding than a StairMaster, and when
you finally reach the top, the view of the city will take away whatever
breath you have left. In fact, whether it’s for jogging or just a
leisurely hike, Mount Bonnell has plenty of captivating amenities to offer.
Learning
to Waterski
by Tania Larson
If you have lived in Central
Texas for just one summer, you know things are about to get uncomfortably,
or for some, even unbearably hot outside. With the danger of dehydration
and heat exhaustion this can put a damper on many outdoor activities. Fortunately,
the Austin area is home to a number of large bodies of water.
Here are some
tips too get started in the refreshingly cool sport of waterskiing.
Exploring the Outdoors
for the first time
by Nora Ramirez
Life around Austin
has a main focus point—the outdoors. From Zilker Park's Barton Springs
swimming hole, to Town Lake's gorgeous hike and bike path, this relaxed
city is the centerpiece of an area with recreational jewels.
But to be able
to enjoy the benefits you need to be prepared. "The first time I ever thought
of outdoor sports I really didn’t know what it was all about," said journalism
sphomore Edna Carmona. That is the case for many who don’t know the nature
oriented face of sports.
My First Bike Ride
by Aaron Kutzer
When they
arrived we mounted up on our bikes. Never having experienced mountain
biking before, I let them lead as we began pedaling down the trail single-file.
Less than 30 seconds after beginning, we encountered a series of
very sharp turns. Since the ever-exuberant Adam was leading, we were all
riding way too fast.We all slammed on our brakes and tried to stay upright
on the loose gravel surface of the trail. Adam and I made it, Jordandidn't.
He fell off his bike and rolled into the woods. Adam yelled, "Jesus,
Jordan, 30 seconds out and you already fell!" I just laughed. Thiswas
already more fun than I had envisioned. Naturally competitive, I
became determined not to fall.
