Klimt was not a hot topic in art history classes of the late 1960's. My wife, a serious art student, berated him as a "designer, not an artist" but in the current research I have been doing for this site, I have found Klimt to be a much more prounounced and apprecited figure than he was 30 years ago. The first work of Klimt's I stumbled upon, literally, was in the window of an esoteric gallery on the corner of Telegraph Ave. and Euclid in Berleleley, California in 1969. The print, the one I cannot seem to reproduce effectively so far for this site, cost over $2000 (back then) as ole Gustav was big on gold leaf. His best reproductions were in printed ink first, then a hand laid gold leaf matching to the original. Thus the extreme cost. Notice from the samples below, he did not restrict the gold leaf to a single work. |
