Battalions of police gathered on every street corner from 55th Street to 42nd Street from early on the afternoon of Hogmanay. 8000 police patrolled central Manhattan from the afternoon to midnight.

 

Barricades were put in place for crowd control from early afternoon. The police were friendly but assertive in ensuring there was a buffer zone between the crowds
