Haiku

A special kind of Japanese poem is called a haiku.  Each poem has three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.  This poem does not include rhymes.  It usually is about seasons or nature.

These are examples of haikus.  Since I do not have the poets’ names, I apologize to these individuals.

*   Pumpkin field in autumn

Little boy grins

A jack-o-lantern smile

*   Full moon in the clouds

Lighting up all the heavens

With silvery blue

*   Writing a poem

Captures a moment in time

Photograph in words

*   After the spring rain

They walked in the wet garden

Growing together

*   The cat on my lap

Arches her smooth, black shoulders

Begging for a stroke

*   Don’t count syllables

Float on the river of words

Tat flows from the heart

*   Over my shoulder

A still bird

Sings

*    Red petal

Swings in spider’s web

Summer wind

*   Slip of tongue

I call out the wrong name

Dog comes anyway

*   Firelight draws

Red and orange flicker

Popcorn noises

*   Snow spatters

White freckles on yellow

Winter moon

*   Too cold for blooms

People crowd under heaters

Swap friendship for sun

*   Peppermint leaves

Noisily the teapot boils

Honey waits in cup

*   Blue magic marker

Wall cries for decoration

My granddaughter draws

*   Storm clouds blow over

Lightening flashes overhead

Wet leaf hits my brow

*   Two polite clouds

Avoid hitting each other

Sun collides with both

*   “Flight”

Black feathers

Shiny wings spread wide

Lazy circle

*   “Night Fall”

Black curtain

Drops silent across stage

Matinee ends

*   “Campfire”

Embers glow

Fire hisses and pops

Feed me

*   “Luna moon”

Luna moon

Green wings wink

Eggs glisten

*   “Moon’s Web”

Silver threads

Mon weaves her nightly web

I dangle

*   “Oz”

Emerald City

Shimmers distant green

Ain’t Kansas

*   “Spider’s Web”

Soft spun silken threads

Gather the morning fresh dew

A breakfast dangles

*        “Lightning”

Light flickers

Illuminates the night sky

Flash attachment

*   “Willow Tree”

Weep not old willow

Though your branches touch the ground

Rain will wash your feet

*   “Waterfall”

Sparkle sapphire drops

Fall down the rock- grown wall

At end they gather

*   “Transition”

Day fades gray

Orange stain fingers close

Night fist dark

*   Under this moon

With its silver train of stars

I miss you more

*   Nightfall

Sudden creaks and moans

My new home

*   Leaves shake

Like a string of bells

*   Inner harbor clear

Clouds mirrored on the water

The silence of sleep
