I am turning an oar on my RED NECK LATHE. It is very useful and low tech. The material to be turned is supported between two pivot points, in my case a wood block with a 1/4" hole fastened to a post and another piece of wood with a 1/4" hole mounted in a "SHOP MATE". A belt sander is used to turn the material and remove wood. To slow the speed of the turning wood rotate the belt sander to the diagonal. Use finishing nails of appropriate size as center points. Changing nails often will keep them from breaking off in your work from the constant flexing. |
